Fashion and trends: jeans

Throughout time, the trends in jeans varies. The history of jeans in the US goes far back to the mid 19th century. Denim, the fabric, is a closely-woven cotton fabric. Nowadays some jeans have a bit of spandex or other synthetic fiber in them for stretch. Since denim is a sturdy and easy to launder fabric, this likely lends to its popularity. At one time in US history, students were not permitted to wear jeans to school (I can recall those days). Jeans were considered to be working-class or farming utilitarian attire instead of fashionable or trendy. One thing is certain, though, jeans have been popular for many decades.

When I was a pre-teen, the bell-bottom style was seen nearly everywhere, and I did own quite a few pair. Some had extremely wide legs, known as elephant-legs. Lately these appear to be making a come-back. The straight-leg and skinny-leg were also popular and in fact still are. Stovepipe-leg is making a comeback, although not one of my favorites. The slightly flared boot-leg cut has also been quite popular for a few decades.

Concerning the overall fit of jeans, there are so many options, ranging from loose and baggy to relaxed-fit to quite tight-fitting. This is often in relation to the rise or waistline. Natural waist or below natural waist? Hip-huggers from the 1960’s made a comeback in recent years. There is also the high-waist style, that is currently trending.

There are also other style choices, including but not limited to pre-wash, stone-wash, the acid-wash of the 1980’s, dark-wash, zip or button fly, and even intentionally torn jeans. Some jeans feature pockets, belt loops, and/or other embellishments. Some are not blue-colored but black, white or another color. So what do you consider to be currently trending?
